CHELTENHAM SENIOR
CITIZENS
CONCERT & TEA
PARTY
Christmas Tea
Parties for Cheltenham Senior Citizens, have
been in existence since around 1948, when the
first one was held to ensure that the seasonal
celebrations started for pensioners in the area.
They have continued ever since under the
guidance of the Cheltenham Senior Citizens
Welfare Committee, with members of that
Committee ensuring that the parties take place.
Throughout this
time, Cheltenham Skittles League has been one of
the two sponsors of these parties, ensuring
their continued future, by taking one week in
November and asking that teams make a donation
to the OFXMP – the current acronym for what we
all know as the Tea Parties. It has, along with
the Football Association enabled the tea party
organisers to shop, and book local
entertainments from year to year. The collection
this year in 2009 ensures that there is a budget
for 2010, and it is a rolling programme of
support. The parties are open to the over 60’s
with the tea starting at 5.00pm, followed by
entertainment, the whole evening ends around
8.00pm when there are free coaches, two of them
each going to the four corners of Cheltenham,
offering a journey to a point near to people’s
homes. Every coach has a guide, to ensure that
travellers not only get on the right bus, but
also get off at the appropriate stop, and seeing
them across the road if necessary. These
volunteers come from the current membership of
The Lions.
This is the
background to the collections or raffle
donations which you make – and the parties are
enjoyed by many of our senior citizens.
This year we are
asking ALL HOME TEAMS for week commencing MONDAY
NOVEMBER 16th
to ensure that
either you make a collection, or donate some of
your raffle proceeds to this CHRISTMAS PARTY
FUND and return all monies to me

Questions and

TO TRANSFER OR
NOT TO TRANSFER
If you are
signing on a new member of your team, and they
have come from a team which has disbanded – they
do not need a transfer form, they do however
need to sign a registration form for your team.
If you have not signed on 20 players already,
(that fee you paid at the start of the year
entitles you to 20 team players ) – any person
joining your team and tipping you over that
magic number of 20 has to pay the £1.25p
registration fee.

I was
asked to attend a surprise presentation on behalf of the
Cheltenham Skittles League at the Brown Jug, Bath Road.
The presentation was made Dennis Selley who has just
sign on for his 60th. season with the Norwood 'A'.
Dennis,87, was demobbed from the RAF in 1949 and joined
the Norwood 'A'. In 1949 the Cheltenham Skittles League
went from just 2 men's divisions to 5 divisions with 48
teams joining in that season. The presentation was made
by his team Captain Mark Hope. Mark said 'you can always
rely on Dennis along with his brother Eric, who has a
mere 55 years under his belt, to be on the alley in good
time to play'.
Roger Thompson, the teams secretary explained that it
was our way of showing how much he is appreciated by the
team. A cut glass bowl engraved with the words 'Dennis
Selley of Norwood Arms 'A' 1949 - 2009 60 years ...
Still playing' A friendly skittles match with the Brown
Jug was arranged for the evening.
